Walt Kelly’s Pogo: The Complete Dell Comics Vol.1

Если совсем вкратце, то это репринт тех самых Animal Comics издательства Dell Comics (подразделение Dell Publishing), которые выходили аж с 1942 года. Картинка на обложке позаимствована с оригинального издания «Animal Comics», выпуск номер 17 за 1945 год. Во многом это очень примечательные комиксы, вот выдержка из Википедии:

Kelly created the characters of Pogo the possum and Albert the alligator in 1941 for issue #1 of Dell’s Animal Comics, in the story «Albert Takes the Cake.» Both were comic foils for a young black character named Bumbazine (a corruption of bombazine, a fabric that was usually dyed black and used largely for mourning wear), who lived in the swamp. Bumbazine was retired early, since Kelly found it hard to write for a human child. He eventually phased humans out of the comics entirely, preferring to use the animal characters for their comic potential. Kelly said he used animals — «nature’s screechers,» as he called them — «largely because you can do more with animals. They don’t hurt as easily, and it’s possible to make them more believable in an exaggerated pose.» Pogo, formerly a «spear carrier» according to Kelly, quickly took center stage, assuming the straight man role that Bumbazine had occupied.

Вообще, объявление на сайте издательства повесили уже довольно давно, вот только писать было немного лениво, все равно отправлять его начнут в лучшем случае в ноябре (у них даже дизайн обложки еще не окончательный). Walt Kelly takes on Senator Joseph McCarthy in the form of wildcat “Simple J. Malarkey” (a controversial move at the time) and more in this collection of years 1953-1954 of the seminal mid-century newspaper strip.

It’s in this volume (featuring another two years’ worth of Pogo strips) that we meet one of Walt Kelly’s boldest political caricatures. Folks across America had little trouble equating the insidious wildcat Simple J. Malarkey with the ascendant anti-Communist senator, Joseph McCarthy. The subject was sensitive enough that by the following year a Providence, Rhode Island newspaper threatened to drop the strip if Malarkey’s face were to appear in it again. Kelly’s response? He had Malarkey appear again but put a bag over the character’s head for his next appearance. Ergo, his face did not appear. (Typical of Kelly’s layers of verbal wit, the character Malarkey was hiding from was a “Rhode Island Red” hen, referencing both the source of his need to conceal Malarkey and the underlying political controversy.) The entirety of these sequences can be found in this book. But the Malarkey storyline is only a tiny portion of those rich, eventful two years, which include such classic sequences as con-man Seminole Sam’s attempts to corner the market on water (which Porkypine’s Uncle Baldwin tries to one-up by cornering the market on dirt); a return engagement of Pup Dog and Houn’dog’s blank-eyed Little Orphan Annie parody “Li’l Arf and Nonny”; Churchy La Femme going in drag to deliver a love poem he wrote, Cyrano style, on Deacon Mush-rat’s behalf to Sis Boombah (the aforementioned hen); P.T. Bridgeport’s return to the swamp in search of new talent; and of course two rousing choruses of “Deck Us All With Boston Charlie.” In addition to presenting all of 1953 and 1954’s daily strips complete and in order for the first time anywhere (many of them once again scanned from original syndicate proofs, for their crispest and most detailed appearance ever), Pogo Volume 3: “Evidence to the Contrary” also contains all 104 Sunday strips from these two years, presented in lush full color for the first time since their original appearance in Sunday sections 60 years ago ― plus the usual in-depth “Swamp Talk” historical annotations by R.C. A mud turtle by trade

Churchy LaFemme: a mud turtle by trade; he enjoys composing songs and poems, often with ridiculous and abrasive lyrics and nonsense rhymes. His name is a play on the French phrase Cherchez la femme, («Look for the woman»). Perhaps the least sensible of the major players, Churchy is superstitious to a fault (for example, panicking when he discovers that Friday the 13th falls on a Wednesday that month). Churchy is usually an active partner in Howland’s outlandish schemes, and prone to (sometimes physical) confrontation with him when they (inevitably) run afoul. Churchy may have once been a buccaneer, because for a time in the early strips he wore a pirate’s hat and was sometimes referred to as «Cap’n LaFemme.» This seems incongruous for the guileless Churchy, however, who is far more likely to play-act with Owl at being a pantomime pirate than the genuine article.

Собственно, жирным отмечен оборот, который встречается довольно часто, меня он долгое время смущал и я, наконец, погуглил о чем вообще речь идет и наткнулся на совершенно новое для меня значение этого слова, по мимо торговли.

trade [treɪd] сущ. — занятие, ремесло, профессия.

Плюс к тому, выяснилось вот на этой странице, что это выражение применимо только к работе/профессии связанной именно с физическим трудом, а не с умственным, это вообще очень хорошо вписывается в характер персонажа, особенно если учитывать, что он периодически использует эту фразу в рассказе о себе. Тяжелая работа — быть черепахой, и не поспоришь.

I’d say ‘by trade’ is usually only used to refer to an occupation involving skilled manual or mechanical work. I’d never say ‘a secretary by trade’ or ‘a researcher by trade’, but I might possibly say ‘a pharmacist by trade’ — probably due to the fact that I’ve heard many pharmacists complain that their job seems to consist primarily of manually measuring or counting out medication.

Pogo — The Complete Syndicated Comic Strips Vol.2Сегодня все про новые книги! До этого я уже писал про то, как руки издателей все таки добрались до печатного станка и на свет появился первый том полного издания Пого в 12 томах. Престарелые фанаты, должно быть, ликуют, потому что серия, к моей огромной радости не канула в небытие (чего нельзя сказать про новые комиксы о спасателях), а продолжает потихоньку печататься. Не так давно на сайте издательства появилась возможность оформить предзаказ на второй том. Издатели пока что укладывается в рамки своих обещаний, и заветный томик имеет все шансы увидеть свет еще до зимы. Цена осталась примерно на том же уровне.

Шел четвертый год…
